It's starting to shape up really nicely. The original UT is still one of my favourite FPS of all time so really excited for when the new one comes out. Time for some PC rebuilds!

Physics and weapons in UT were interesting, but the maps weren't that great sadly which is why....
Q3 (w/OSP and then CPMA VQ3 mod) > All...hence why it was stilled used in competition more than 10 years after it's original release, the UT games that followed the original all failed too.

Game developers have lost touch and have no idea how to make games anymore, they just look at the market and see ways of making easy dollars, release a shit easy game with shitty features made for noobs....making things console based is shit too, it fucks the game up totally.

Played both extensively and as much as people compare them they are quite different in some ways. The weapons and physics were hands down better in UT. I think Quake 3 favoured movement speed a little too much and it made the 'skill' portion of the game tailor to twitch responses rather than a combination of that and strategic use of weapons / environment. The weapons in general in Q3 I found very bland/boring and prior to CPMA balance wasn't the best either IMO. UT on the other hand had more weapons, greater diversity, multiple firing modes and it all added far more strategy and I believe skill to the gameplay. Again part of the overall blandness of Q3 was in an attempt to standardise things to a point that made it as equal as possible in online multiplayer so I get their underlying approach but I really don't have any strong memories of maps / moments in Q3. On reflection it was a forgettable experience. Don't get me wrong though mates and I played the crap out of it at some points, but it did get boring fast. UT was the staple and had a much longer impression and it was the one we overall played the most of during that era (aside from CS depending on version 1.3 and 1.6 was pretty much CS for daaaaaaays).

Both Q3 and the UT series were used equally across most professional gaming competitions, the fact Q3 still gets played (as does the original UT!) to this date is mainly due to the fact that there have been no versions released since then that have been as strong in the multiplayer experience. UT2003, 2004 and UT3 were far from failures all getting extremely high reviews (most in the 9/10 range) especially compared to Q4 which was in the 7-8/10.

Disagree totally on the maps, as does the majority of the internet. UT maps were brilliant, very well balanced, looked interesting and still to this day come in on different sites 'Top' lists for best FPS multiplayer maps. Deck 16 and Facing Worlds come to mind straight away, with a lot of people rating Facing Worlds as one of the best FPS maps of all time. UT also had a much greater variety partly due to the superiority of its game modes in comparison to Q3 and the wide availability of mutators.

I might come across biased, but I really have no brand loyalty when it comes to games/genres I play what I believe to be the best at the time. My top 10 FPS list would probably be a mess of different developers and I agree with the sentiment that in general the FPS genre, particularly arena based had gone to shit over the last decade. The 1999-2004 era was the golden age. Thing is, gaming like everything else has fashions and arena games did die out. Look at RTS as well, hard to find a good one, and space sims (although with Elite and Star Citizen they look to be making a comeback). I think that is why people are getting excited for the new UT as it is the first time in a very long time we'll have another awesome arena FPS.

Double Kill! Multi Kill! MEGA KILL! ULTRA KILL!! M-M-MONSTER KILL!!!

^ This is why UT is the best. The announcer made you feel like Chuck Norris on steroids.

Who gives a shit about physics and maps and Quake (I grew up with Quake by the way). Quake was shit after the first game and UT2004 was epic.

Games/movies/entertainment now days centralises around kids to early teens.

No liabilities, excess cash, and parents wanting to give them something for some peace and quiet.

This is why you're seeing a lot of pointless additions to games like skins, cammos etc.

Dedicated servers are now a thing of the past and micro transactions are becoming VERY popular 'you'll see in a lot of gaming forums players are asking to be able to purchase weapons and sundry not part of the game', without dedicated servers and end users not being able to make maps, commands etc developers and distribution houses can pretty much control the complete life cycle of the game.

In regards to consoles, they don't really need to be upgraded as frequently as PCs' and have a lower setup cost, also kids these days just want press buttons without much thought.

Mullmans also finds he doesn't get owned as much with aim assist activated.
