Hi,

Need to buy a new laptop for work, need something which is super quick and able to have quick processing time when using video editing software and CAD base software. Also i need something that isn't super bulk and has decent battery life. Oh and needs to be PC base as MAC doesn't suit my current needs.

Price ideally 2k or under (would like to say closer to the 1.5k mark)

So far this one seems the go with good spec and SSD http://www.notebookcheck.net/Asus-G501JW-Notebook-Review.141745.0.html

however reviews are mix, and there seems to be issue with the 4k screen.

any input or other suggestion would be great

Thanks

Don't rule out a mac willy nilly.

VM Fusion and Parallels run pretty much seamlessly these days, the only down side is the amount of hard drive space it takes up (about 60gb).

My Macbook Pro with a windows virtual machine through VM Fusion runs faster than most windows pc's.

Dell XPS 13. Best Windows laptop currently available and depending on specs slides right through that price range

Can get this for just under 2K if you come see me

Its pretty tidy for a 17 inch laptop - 3Kg

Otherwise...

If you really want to go light... Have a look at the Lenovo Yoga 3 i7 ultrabook/convertible - About $1800. about 1.5Kg

I7-5500, 8GB, 256 SSD, Nvidia 940M, 14" 1080p touch screen / convertible tablet

Also...

I think I have another one...

HP 15" laptop dont remember model number...

It had a i7, 16GB ram, 256 SSD, 15.6" Full HD LED, 4Gb Nvidia GTX graphics (860M If I remember right) - between 1800-1900 IIRC

Everytime one of these threads up i always recommend these Metabox. Have used their top of the line machine for 4-5 yrs now and it still plays BF4 on full. Obviously the lower end models around the $1500 - $2k range is what your looking for. But they are top notch, great quality, serious gear inside them and great service.

To programme the M5 I got told to get a solid state lap top.
Got a Sony Viano?
Can't remeber specs but I get around 9 hours of battery life
3 seconds max to close down
7 seconds max to boot up
Around 30 minutes for full charge
Weights maybe 1kg
Would be less than 10mm thick
Touch screen and keyboard
~1800 bucks.

^ I have one, Sony Pro 13.

Sony stopped making Vaio's probably 18 months ago, so not a viable option really.

hi Ludwig,

thanks for the reply, was also looking at some MSI laptops as they have some good spec for the price, ideally i like to stick with 15inch as 17inch becomes little be harder for me to take around with me. I will definitely pop in to see you once i work out exactly what i am after cheers!

Do you work every day?

Too true. I take it the pro is the superseded model?

Sorry, to be clear I have the Vaio Pro, by the sounds of it same as yours.

I believe Sony ceased manufacturing all laptops at about that time.

You can *ahem* aquire a copy of vm fusion or parallels relatively easily if you want to try it out. Personally I prefer fusion.

You can reduce the hdd size somewhat, but it all depends on how much space you want your virtual machine to take up.
I think I have my win7 vm set at around 30gb, and I can launch any application I want from OSX and it just pops up like a regular window ... maybe a 3 second delay to wait for the first one to load up as it resumes the vm.

read the specs for the software you want to use, a friend is also looking for a 3D Sofware laptop and looking at specs for software like solidworks, autocad, revit they required SSE2 chipset.

Problem with mac is poor storage. 256GB or 512GB isn't enough. add to the factor all my portable hdd are the wrong format for mac.

I do like there size/weight and battery life but 95% i have access to a power point so that shouldn't really be an issue
