View Full Version : Ve clubby r8 weird starting issue.

G'day sluts, my apprentice here at works got a ve r8 clubby manual.
It's having a strange starting problem only when warm. Cold it starts runs and drives fine. Warm engine start results in a slow crank, low batt voltage fire up eventually and drops a cylinder or two.
He's gone thru and changed crank angle sensor, battery and battery cable. All with genuine items.
Seems to be a newish upcoming issue with them. Anybody shed some light?
Does not throw up any codes when it's running shitty. Car is stock except for exhaust and clutch.
I've suggested starter is dying. Looking at where they live under there it could be possible but it would not explain the dropping of cylinders.
Trying to convince him to let me take it home for a few days

Possibly engine temp sensor or coil packs getting real hot?

Can literally be a 20sec lap down the street and back before prob arises.
Have been thinking fuel delivery issue or oil temp sensor myself. Really just guesses.

Have you pulled any codes from it? If it's running like ass and you shut it down and immediately restart it, does it improve?

hahaha i know exactly what the problem is. Starter motor is getting to hot from your exractors. My mates car has the same problem and now mine since i fitted extractors 6 months ago . I get calls at least twice a week for starter motors and each time i always say.... Your extractors are causing your prob. The then say how did you know i have extractors. Very common especially when the exaust shops leave off the heatsheild to fit them in.
Even the wiring to the starter motor getting hot can cause the car to run rough
Was about to say my mate just went through this - ended up being voltage drop through hot wiring

I spoke to mitch at WA performance and asked him if msd or anyone does a starter that can handle the heat. msd do one for LS but left hand drive only. Only way to solve it is put a heatsheild on and wrapp the extractors with hi quality wrap

That is a bloody good answer. A friend of mine was talking about the same issue a few weeks ago. Typically when you surf forums you get vague responses but that ^^^ is a great response! A+++ Would read future posts

Thanks mate, its such a common problem and working for holden parts helps shed light on to alot of common probs.
My car just about didnt start a few weeks back so i better get onto the prob asap too
Another really comon probem on VY ls1's are Alternators. Its not the alternator failing its leaking power steering pump. Its mounted directly above the alternator and the pump leaks directly all over the top of the alternator. I too have been through 2 alternators till i sussed it out. I get customers ring for Ls1 alternators and i say to check the power steering pump and sure enough its always the case. I hope someone does a cover or sheild to run off the oil till fixing. Might fabricate one up

i still have the original starter motor on my vy and it's had the shield removed for years, never had a problem with it.
VE starter motors will also have a bendable shield around the starter anyway which should never need to be removed, even with extractors.
I would tell the dude to make sure all the power/earth points in the engine bay are tight. so jumper point on the passenger side and near the fuse box on the drivers.
however if it's running like shit after it's started, i would say it's probably got fucked 02 sensors and is adding a whole bunch of fuel. (they can add up to 20-25% if they think it's running lean)

You got extractors (not hsv ones) on the VY? If so thats a first i have heard of. They usually last a year tops
Same with VZ LS2 I'd assume? I've had 1 7/8th 4-1s for over 2 years no problems. The only heat shields installed are over the power steering rack boots.

My thoughts exactly, I've got the car in my shed now for a few days. Going to crawl over it a little from Friday. Quick look before work this afternoon, no shield over the starter fitted. I'll put my lambda meter in the exhaust tomorrow and see what the afr is at.
The +ve battery post in the engine bay is the point where the cable from the battery meets the cable to the starter. Used to get bad connections at that point causing hard starting on VE.
That or starter motor would be my guess.
