View Full Version : 1974 Mazda 808 - New daily/tidy up/resto project

Picked this up the other day.

1974 Mazda 808. 1.3L of 4 cylinder, 4 speed fury. The interior is near on immaculate, with only some minor tearing to the headrest of the drivers seat, very little rust in the body, and only 55500km on it.

Jacob, the previous owner (you may of seen driving it from time to time), spent a bit of time getting it running nicely, and tidying it up. He even had Roto's rebuild the front end so the struts and everything are all new. It's been lowered a little & has whitewall inserts, but other than that it is as it rolled out of the factory.

IT'S FUCKING AWESOME. Slow, but awesome.

So, plans...

1 - New door/window rubbers. They are 42 years old after all.
2 - Clean up and treat what little rust there is. There is a little bit in the bottom of the passenger door, and surface rust under the bonnet & in the boot.
3 - Replace whitewall inserts with proper whitewalls. (Or get the current tyres sorted)
4 - Alarm, central locking and GPS.
5 - Detail.
6 - Stereo. Hidden bluetooth receiver, splits, sub and amp. Need to see if there is room in the kick panels as I don't want to modify the doors. No metal is to be cut, nothing that cannot be undone. Will get new panels made up, wrap the OEM ones up and stash them away.
7 - Dynamat. Everywhere.
8 - Gauges. Oil pressure, temp, water temp, tacho. All mounted low and out of the way.
9 - Period mags. OEM wheels n hubcaps will be tucked away.
10 - Bare metal respray. A long, long time away yet.

There are no plans for a rotor. 808's in this condition are becoming rarer than Buckets getting a leave pass for LFXX. (There will be no blower sitting higher than roof level!)
If the engine dies I will rebuild it. Maybe with a little bit of compression, balancing n stuff, but that's it.

Pics. Most have come from Jacob's time with the car. I've been too busy driving it. Will pull the camera out soon and take some detailed pics. In the mean time....

No RX3 conversion. As much as I love the RX3's, I'm going to stick with the flat nose front.

Rotary in an 808, blasphemy!!! I'd go the Mazda B6 from the MX-5, keep a piston motor in a piston car. B6 motor's are plentiful, cheap and economical. A ton of aftermarket accessories and turbo/supercharger kits. I have a conversion DIY write-up laying around somewhere for an 808 if you do it.

Sick car.
Get a NA 13b from a series 4. Will still be conservative and will be an awesome car for a daily.

If you decide you need doritos in your life, surely you'd be better off buying something that already runs rather than building one?

The two guys in here that have rotary cars that they've built themselves do not have a good record for doing it on any sort of budget or timeline.

Rotary engines Displacement Sweep Volume Maximum Capacity
10A 491 cc x 2 982 cc 1964cc
12A 573 cc x 2 1146 cc 2292cc
13B 654 cc x 2 1308 cc 2616cc
20B 654 cc x 3 1962 cc 3924cc

https://infrastructure.gov.au/roads/vehicle_regulation/bulletin/pdf/NCOP3_Section_LA_Engine_01jan2011_v3.pdf

Not that I have looked this stuff up at all...

Also;

http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d106/fatgal65/laiop3006.jpg

Have found other info listing the 74 808 at 840kg.

So going off that....
Original mass (kg) x 4.0 = maximum capacity in cc’s
1974 808 STC sedan. 840kg x 4.0 = 3360cc maximum capacity.

=12a and 13b legal.

For aspirated vehicles weighing between 800kg to 1100kg:

Original mass (kg) x 2.75 = maximum capacity in cc’s
1974 808 STC sedan. 840kg x 2.75 = 2310cc maximum capacity.

=12a turbo is legal due to being under 2310cc, however 13b turbo is illegal due to its 2613cc capacity.

Above blatantly stolen from AusRotary

Pav
14-07-2016, 09:16 PM
I must be getting old coz I agree with OP; just leave it stock.

It will be easier and wayyyy cheaper to go buy one that's already been converted if you wanted to go down the rotary path.

And for all of you suggesting to go 20b, you're all mad. Do you have any idea the work and costs involved to buy and build up a reliable ported 20b? The OP will need minimum $20 - 25k, and that will probably only get you as far as the engine bay. Then you still have to spend on engine management, gbox conversion, diff, brakes, bigger fuel lines, fuel system etc etc.

monk_13
15-07-2016, 04:09 AM
Spot on Pav. As much as I would like some brap in my life, this isn't the car for it. As much as I enjoy tinkering, I'd buy something already done. This, while it will be rebuilt at some point, it will be a resto job, with a few mod cons thrown in.

I was going to start collecting a few bits n pieces for it this pay, but I have actually got some motivation to work on the Evo for once....

So, the Mazda failed me the other day. Driving down the road and it just stopped. Rolled to a stop laughing as it literally just ticked over it's 57000th km.

Anyway, popped the bonnet, checked for fuel - all good. Checked for spark out of the coil - fail. Was headed down to see Matt at Autopro in Canningvale so grabbed a new coil and a ballast resistor while I was there.
Unfortunately he couldn't dig up a set of points for me, so I crossed my fingers that it was the coil that died. Another fail. Swapped the new coil & resistor in, but no luck. Got the old test light out, and there was power where power should exist. Popped the dizzy cap off, and cranked it. No spark between the points.
Gave things a bit of a wiggle, got an intermittent spark. Had other shit to do so had to leave it there. I'll pull the points today and give em a clean up.

Last night I did a little hunting. A little surprisingly Supercheap stock condensers for the 1300, but unfortunately they have nothing for the points.
While I'm there I'll grab a new coolant temp sensor, plugs, leads and general service bits as well. The leads are starting to show signs of corrosion and the OEM temp gauge is a bit dicky. Hopefully a new sensor sorts it.
Ebay has found me a new rotor button, dizzy cap and points. Seeing as these sorts of things seem to be getting rarer, I'll grab a few sets and stash them away for future use.

I've also picked up up some new bailey channel for the windows, and a set of metal "Mazda 808" badges for the rear 1/4's after I caught my shirt on one and broke it :(
I'll be collecting a few bits and pieces as I go along, that will get used in the eventual resto.

Shopping list so far:
Service Items - Filters, plugs, points, condenser, leads, rotor button, dizzy cap - Veales/Supercheap
Temp Sensor - Veales/Supercheap
Pillar mount aerial - http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/112202702225
Rubber kit - http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/262794614368
Washer & rad overflow bottles n bits - http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/262785846323
Sun visor - http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/261436667305
Front Glass - http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/252679997261

Still need to sort the rear suspension and some seat covers. I'd forgotten how much vinyl seats suck in the summertime.

Negative. Car is staying a 'Simple' daily/cruise car.

There may be triangles in it's future. There may not.... If I can't find a S5 NA donk somewhere, I may go 12a and a hair dryer. Or I'll throw in a forced induction MX5 donk.
Either way I want the whole shit show engineered, which means I need to stick to guidelines.

Badges are here. Surprisingly weighty!

Might also take my spare nose cone in and get it media blasted. It's pretty straight, so I'll tap out any little dings, straighten any tabs that need it, then prime it, and tuck it away.

2 project cars is like having 2 dicks.. You can still only use one at a time.
Concentrate on emo, park other while it appreciates in value, drive evo then wonder why you ever bothered with overpriced Mazda's from the 70's.. ;) Then drop ported rotor straight in 808 and be obnoxious.

But you're right. Bits n pieces like the badges I'm going to grab when I see them, before they disappear. Other than those sorts of items and maintenance, financial outlay on the 808 will be minimal, until the evo is on the track.

Then I'll be doing the resto/mod thing on the 808. Although I'm thinking I might annoy the rotor crew and stick with pistons.

No idea, was checking for the hatch and couldn't believe it was available. I almost bought them to resell, but the reality is that personal plates here don't generally sell for what you pay for them.

The hatch has a set of plates waiting for it already - just need to get modifications approved, engineered then across the pits.... oh and across the Nullabour.

Yup.. Never been more broke!!! And have had 20 plus rotors, so have done the hard yards :P

Love the piston idea - BP18T FTW. Mate owns one of the Boostworx 808's in NSW - absolute weapons :)
