Cool movie! The Unfamiliar Road: Overland Motorcycle Adventure

Hey temporary citizens, thought a bunch of you would like to see this..

A mate of mine, Dan Greening (couple of you know him) has always had a passion for motorbikes and adventure.
A couple of years ago he sent himself on an EPIC ride that started from here in Perth and finished in.... "When are you coming back to play music with us?" we (band) would ask. "Don't know, I'm having too much fun!" And so he just kept going. And going. Till he reached London.

Dan is a filmmaker and has documented the whole trip. If you like bikes and/or have any sense of adventure, you need to spend 5 minutes watching this 'preview' clip - you'll be blown away.

I have seen numerous other 'segments' from this documentary he is producing and all are just as good as this review clip.

Incredible, a motorbike trip like this is a bucket list item for me - thought maybe not to this extent. Will be purchasing, very interested to see the whole movie.

Did a trip in vietbam on a scooter and got hooked on this stuff. Its super cheap there (three weeks total cost of about 2k, flights, scooter accommodation, everything) and a great experience so I would recommend it as a beginners trip.

Picked up a DR650 when I returned and hoping to do a trip in a year or two.

Actually didnt use a tour operator. Was supposed to go Kathmandu but my brother rolled his ankle. We still got on the first flight to KL. Watched the top gear Vietnam special in a KL hotel and decided to do it ourselves so two days later we hit Saigon.

Bought bikes on craigs list in Saigon for about $200USD
Used google maps to stay on the Ho chi minh trail and just stayed at "hotels" overnight in villages on the way to Hanoi. Sold the bikes for about $100USD in Hanoi then went home...took about 2.5 weeks.

Hats off to him. That's an epic trip.

Re Vietnam I went with these guys. XR250's for about 10 days. Just myself and a mate and a guide. Highlights were the home stays. Staying with locals in bamboo huts drinking their moonshine rice wine and eating their home coooked food. Highly recommended.

This is worthy of story with pic thread here!

I want to do the lap of Aus on a KLR650 as a start, been on my bucket list ever since reading up on a guy who lapped the world on one. Someone posted a writeup of a lap of Aus with their old man on one a couple of years ago here I am pretty sure.

First search whenever I go on gumtree is usually for a KLR650, Aus wide too as no harm in getting half the lap done riding it home haha

Have you considered a DR650? its a little bit lighter and more popular (easy to get parts etc) tho I have been told the KLR has better road manners for those long distances on tarmac you need to cover when touring Australia.....

Consider getting on the Perth Adventure Riders group on Facebook. Heaps of friendly guys there with lots of knowledge.

Safety is a big issue tho. One guy who was recently doing a round Australia trip had a big accident in the middle of nowhere. He was wearing a neck brace so avoided spinal damage when he landed on his head but broke his collarbone, few ribs and had a lot of internal bleeding. He was prepared tho. Had an emergency sat phone and managed to call for help.

Not to discourage you, but yeah just so you know it does come with greater risk. Having said that I have really enjoyed doing this stuff thus far!

I don't have a partner either. Just bought the bike and then did a one day crash course in dirt riding down south after I got my LAMS licence.

Then joined that Perth ADV rider group and started heading out with them. They have rides pretty much every second week and they vary from half day 200km rides to multi day trips around the state. I usually go to the ones in the Mundaring area. Happy to take you out some time if you rather start in a smaller group. I know it can be a bit overwhelming to try and keep up with a big group of experienced riders when u first hit dirt hahaha

Just a word of advice, if you do get into it don't get carried away with getting the best bike. Lots of guys on the course with me had 30k+ bmw's which actually did a lot worse than I did on my sub 3k dr650.....i think there were a few bruised egos that weekend but yeah they definitely had a more comfortable ride back to Perth.
