Getting ready for my next set of tyres and I'm tossing up between the following

- Toyo Open Country A/T 2
- BFG KO2

Any opinions, reviews or experiences with these tyres? Or any other decent A/T's for that matter.

Cheers

Still reckon Bridgestone 697's are hard to beat for the price and the wear you get from them. We run them on our fire trucks too and they get fucking trashed.

Wouldnt buy the toyos again.

Having worked on the fleet for Wheatstone, I’ve used shit loads of different brands and ranges of tyres, out of those you’ve listed, the KO2’s are the better, the Wheatstone cars drive on a combination of gravel and bitumen and the tyres get hammered, barely lasting a year, the only two tyres that seem to take it are, the KO2’s and surprisingly Nankang AT5’s, I actually put the Nankangs on my Prado after seeing how good they copped abuse.
It’s funny, the tyre of choice up here is Bridgestone 697’s, and they are shit, for country style roads/tracks. The city might be different though. My brother is still getting around in my old pathy with maxtrek mud trac muddies I bought 4 years ago for just over $200 each, still got bulk tread sand he hammers them on some rocky shit looking for surf spots.

Agreed. We run them on our U/G Mining fleet for that reason. They're on the lighter end of an A/T but a good allrounder.

I run Duratracs on the Pajero. Can't fault them for an aggressive A/T, other than they fucking howl once you get past 50% wear

I'm currently running a set of 697's up here in the Kimberley. They are bloody tough but seem to let me down when the crust breaks on our unsealed roads.

I’m surprised people rate the 697’s, after changing hundreds out for different brands I think they are junk for the price, I’d put them up there with the supplied Bridgestone HT’s that come standard on Hilux/Prado’s. They puncture so easy and if pressures aren’t monitored constantly, they wear uneven very quickly.
I pulled a self tapper out of a neighbours the other day, it was only short yet it went through it easily, that was the 10 ply 265/75 as well.

I have KM2 muddies on mine, bulk tread, not stupid noisey and even at 30psi they float over the beach here, might be they are 35’svand have a huge footprint ;P

Happy with the last set of toyo open countries i put on. 1k for 5 fitted. Plenty of life left in them after 40km and have lasted well on unsealed roads and rocky surfaces.

Run 697's on both the Tourer (2012 NW Pajero - 265/65/17) and Work Horse (07 Rodeo - 265/75/16)

Love them, especially for the price

As said above though... have had a couple of head shaking simple punctures

Had Cooper STT, BFG KM2 & Goodyear MTR before, all were noisy and wore really fast

Running 697s on my Prado. Rate them highly. Spent 3 weeks in the Pilbara in all sorts of weather on a lot of different surfaces and they never let me down.

km2 are pretty good for driving as they are a really small 35 and comparatively light, they measure 33.8 from memory, next to a toyo or mickey thompson 35 they look so tiny.

the most daily friendly 35 muddies, if there is such a thing

Sorry, should have clarified earlier. Ideally I want a tyre that can do everything, wears well and is quiet...

My 4WD is a weekender and predominately a touring setup. If I was to break it down realistically it would be;

- 75% road
- 10% unsealed road (Kimberley wet season)
- 5% sand
- 5% rock/stone
- 5% mud/clay

Looking at that you think H/T or A/T but its that one of moment when a road turns to shit or your mates want to head to a tight spot with muddy sections.

You must have got some duds, I have a brand new one on the back, measured exactly 35”, but drivability wise, they are great, can’t comment on wear from new, but since we’ve had the car, they’ve barely done 1mm of wear, and that’s with a lot of highway and gravel road driving, I make sure I keep the pressures on point for the driving I’m doing though. A big problem is folk will cruise around at 40psi everywhere.

The KO2 is perfect for that, if I go back to an A/T they are first on the list, will eat the 697 all day long for toughness 😛

$270-$280 is the cheapest I've seen AT2's. I think Integrity had a deal going a little while ago for them.

Just finished Fraser Island on Factory tyres for the FJ cruiser.
Inskip. 18 psi and did 5kmh in low range. Not even close to a challenge.
Rest of the island 14 psi. Not bogged once.
Sandy Point which is the most northen point we did at night. Drove over the rocks in high tide nice and slow. Didnt puncture side walls.

End of the day I've done a lot of 4x4 and any decent brand 4x4 tyres if you have the right pressure and drive accordingly you won't have a problem.

Last set were yoko geolander amd this set the Dunlop. Would buy either and choice would be price driven.

I have been running Hankook RT03 on the last 3 cars I have had. They are classed as a MT but are more like an aggressive AT, possibly a bit too aggressive for sand at higher psi but fine when lowered and handle all conditions well.

No drama mate, go for it.

I need to change my opinion of Bridgestone A/T 697. Bloke had them on his Hilux and took me out near the Keep River in the NT for a fish. The terrain was absolute SLOP and somehow we got through it! Arms got a work out from constant lock to lock driving but we made it. Suitably impressed!

This thread reminds me of my need for two new Kumho AT51's in 305/70R16. Look pricey as, might as well grab four new chinese chalk blocks lol.

Try Medina Tyre Save for those, always seems to have Kuhmo prices low.

It just astounds me how many people dont drop tyre pressure. You see them all line up and must go from 36 psi to 30 psi.
The amount of draw bars that unhitched was mind boggling. If it wasnt there it was 10k down the beach.
My mate with the Iveco 4x4 (BUGOUT) and i probably lifted 2 or 3 trailers with his lift hook. Guys using bottle jacks on the beach with high tide coming in washing away the sand.

Some people should not take on hungry sand or at least go to a 4x4 training facility or go to your local 4x4 beach and learn how their cars work. There was one guy in a Nissan patrol kept getting bogged. Car was in 4wd. But it was the model that needed the wheel brace to lock the front hubs. Did that for the guy and straight out the hole it went.

When i read Fraser Island Eli Creek washes away 1.5m in 4wd's each year i though what ever. Being there and watching the ocean swallow cars was nothing but non experience and simply stupid acts.

I rescue on average one guy a month up here, what’s worse is once you’re on the actual wet sand, you could skateboard on it. Tourists hitting the beach at 40psi and hi range and no momentum, I leave mine at 30psi and have only needed to drop it to 18 when I snatched a guy out after he buried his Mitsi 4WD van.

Ive got 285/50/20 Nittos on the Ranger and go straight to 18 for Preston beach, did a bit of the dunes last week and went 14 and it was easy peasy. Having not a lot of sidewall to bellow out with that tyre but worked fine.

West State Tyres wins again. No one has quoted within 30 bucks of WST's quote per tyre. Even tyresales.com.au is a dollar more expensive lol

I have 265/70 R17 BFG KO2's (LT 121 rated) on my landbarge (3 tonne+) Disco and no complaints after 15,000 kms.

They are amazing offroad and pretty fuss free quiet on road performers. They also seem to be wearing quite well, maybe a mm or 2 so far so I am hopeful that 60,000km or so will be achievable on this set without running them down to the belts. I bought 5 including the spare so have been rotating them through each service.

There are some online scandals regarding KO2's cracking due to a manufacturing defect, though it was mentioned this may only be on grey import tyres of questionable origin. Have been keeping a close eye on mine and no warning signs so far.

Most of my mates seem to now be running the KO2, however one of us has got Nitto Terraprapplers and is very happy with them. They were about $70 a corner cheaper than the BFG as well, so maybe worth a look.

I've got the Falken Wildpeak A/Ts on my navara and Toyo Ats on my work bt50.

Falkens are quiter, cheaper, and looking like will get more kays out of them.

A million options.

BFG and Coopers people will argue for days over which one is minutely better - in short the others have well and truly caught up to them.

I like aggressive tyres - but that’s mainly due to the terrain I drive (rocky shaley)

Currently rolling MAXXIS RAZR AT810s - about 1000ks in so far, quite (quieter than I expected) got these as I couldn’t get stock of my previous tyres.

Toyo RT - noisier, but really durable

Nitto Ridge grapplers were the other option I wanted - but no supply.

All similar in price and should wear well
