Rear drawers

Hi guys,

I’m removing the rear seats from my SWB Pajero and want to install a draw system and fridge slide setup. Obviously there won’t be an off the shelf product to meet my needs so I’m going to have to go custom or modify an existing set. With weight being very important, is there a brand that is widely regarded as the lightest? Can anyone also recommend a professional place to have a custom job done in Perth?

Check the measurements of the ones on 4WD Supacentre, they are strong as fuck, and they have a fridge slide, not too heavy either.

Had my FJ ones done by Custom Installation in WANGARA. Can not fault and everything exceeded my expectations.

My set up cost 2k. Every mm was used.

I had a 60lt fridge loaded the whole time. Draws full of tools etc. Performed flawless. Even the way he secures the fridge was simple and effective.
Slides are rates to 180 kg.
Would not go the Super Centre ones.
Also went to the Super Centre when i was in Qld earlier this year and the store walk has made me glad I haven't bought their products.

You’ve not seen the drawers they sell then, guarantee they are tougher than yours, or easily on par.
They aren’t cheap mdf based ones, it’s a full metal frame with roller bearings etc.
I built my last set from 16mm mdf and these are ten times stronger

I built my own with 16mm plywood for the rear of a Discovery 2. Not really that cheap when I think about it. Probably cost me $600 in materials, tools I didn't have and a $100 fridge slide from gumtree.

The SuperCentre drawers are really decent and would do the job nicely but I wanted to avoid the tacky looking gaps either side as I don't own a Patrol, Prado or Landcruiser as they only have wing kits for those models.

Drifta or MSA are other companies that make decent drawers but far more expensive.

I don’t mind the gaps on mine, I fill it with shit and gives access to the side pockets for jacks, washer reservoir etc.

There is a Guy in Floreat his name is Victor, he makes customs drawers and fridge slideout. they are soild as all hell and the price was very cost effective. He can even provide the Engle Slide out fridge.

Excellent set of drawers and superior to the 4wd supacentre ones that several of my mates have. They are not particularly light though.

I think they run at around $1300 brand new, I picked mine up for $550 used.

Um... I was in their stores. It's cheap shit. Some of it ok. But if you are doing a long trip I don't think the gear will work flawlessly or last.
When I was in the store they had shit everywhere. They also had a long list of people making warranty claims. Service was substandard.

Metal draws noisy as fuck on rough roads. Roller bearings they use fail in dusty areas. Heavy.

Wood quiet and yes you do lose space but well designed draws make up for it.

My draws were made to the mm. In the FJ with the door open and draw open there is 3mm clearance. The wings are not hinged but rest
on a simple 90 degree bracket that fits snug and perfectly shaped to the panel. It lifts off where traditional hinges take space. Once lifted I opted for the trim to be cut out.

In the cut out I fitted 1 x 20 m winch extension strap. 2 x 5m tree protector straps. 10m of tow rope. Reese hitch tow assembly. Factory tool kit.
In the other panel I have all my compressor fittings. 12 m of airline. Air tools. Access to relays/switches etc/circuit breakers to compressor/rear AUX power line..
I have my ARB twin compressor fitted in the void of the rear 1/4 panel and simply open the rear factory storage compartment to expose the compressor and air line fittings.

With the bulky stuff out of the way I had one draw used as a pantry/cook area. The other draw had tools/4 snatch blocks/chains/4kg gas bottles/ cooking equipment etc. Drinks etc.

The wing set up was awesome.

Just sharing my experience, nothing more, nothing less. I did 7,200k and the draws performed flawless.
I also did 620k on Fraser Island which was ruts/bumps etc and the draws showed no sign of wear. The fringe slide I was somewhat nervous.
But Custom Installations assured the set up will be fine. The slide fridge draw side were rated to 180kg. I had a 60lt NL fridge which was loaded. No issue and probably was used some 20 times a day.
The draws had a locking mechanism that locked them open/close in the half way position. This was brilliant when you weren't parked on flat ground.
You press the open button again which released the draws to full open or closed.
The amount of Kings draws( and other similar design) I saw that rolled straight of it's frames was unreal. Just the constant load coming to a stop with a loaded draw eventually took their toll.
I'll try to get some photos up by the end of the week for ideas.

Mine have come out of my prado, so between the two cars it’s an average of about 30,000km. Been flawless, even the track we hit near Karijini which had ruts so big for 30km one of my headlight globes fell out and a mate lost a panel on his fj cruiser, not a peep out of the drawers, and they aren’t even bolted in, two small straps either side holds them down as I don’t like them being permanent.
These drawers are made by a 3rd party, not 4WD supacentre.

Every track up here is rutted, you want to go to the local river, you get ruts, and since we have fuck all entertainment up here, that’s what we do, it’s not Perth with its flat roads and the once a year trip away driving, it’s 600km round trips to do grocery shopping a month and shit tracks which are closed 3 months of the year due to flooding.

Used to do 10, 000 a month from northam to the top end of WA in a 4x4.

Every bit of road/dirt track probably driven on.
Work car. Quickly learnt what works and what doesn't hence my choice in equipment.

If it works for you it works.

The titan draws on slopes would slide to a stop on the bearings. The bearings were the bump stop. Held on by a 8mm bolt. Eventually these would shear resulting in the draws falling out.

Seen plenty of them do it with that design.

100kg draw with that design and the momentum of the draw would snap them.

I wanted a draw system rail that lockes half way to stop the draw getting too much momentum.

Wrong, they stop on a rubber stop, you install it, it’s the first thing you do before installing them. One on each side of the drawer, held on with 2 bolts each. It might not be for you, but they are a genuinely decent set of drawers, both drawers and frames have multiple sets of bearings and run smooth with no room for vibration or out of the norm wear and tear.

Wooden draws might last a few years, but they will fatigue if you are doing proper exploring... As will cheaply built metal ones...
