    School me on cheap 4X4's

I'm in the market for a sub 10k 4WD daily as the GTR is far too loud, obnoxious and expensive to drive all the time. And the loaner car i've been using everytime it goes in to get fixed will soon not be available to me any more.

I've been swaying towards TD42 Gq patrols. Is it worth the extra to find a turbo one?

Will i still be paying toyota tax in this price range?

I searched high and low for a 4WD in that price range and found it difficult to find a decent example. Everything had been driven into the ground or used as a fun weekend bush/beech explorer.

The occasional petrol powered Landcruiser would pop up in fantastic condition but few and fair between.

Have you considered a Land Rover Discovery 2? All the mod-cons, live axel and can be had around that price. Many of them are in good condition and they are fairly easy to work on.

i paid less than 10k for the Paj i picked that box up in, I was dead set getting a GU patrol until i test drove them & they were horrendous, the Paj is great offroad & great onroad as a daily driver,
it gets around 400km for $65 in the tank driving too & from the city, any other 4wd this size would use way more

    def worth considering

2000 era Landcruiser or Prado? Mate has a 2000 or 2002 Prado with the 1KZ? Goes well.

I was in the same boat about a year ago. Ended up cutting my budget right down and got a Mitsubishi Challenger for $6k. Has all modern electrics, cruise control, etc. Has never faulted with the occasionally offroad adventures.

yeah me to, finally picked up a decent 80 series Landcrusier, but its petrol and uses more fuel than a supercharged V8, would not recommand for a daily but it drives awesome and goes hard offroad. the 200 era prados have dropped in price should get a half decent one for under 8k.

So, like every other car ever made?

I paid $3900 for my 02 Pathfinder, never ever failed me in 2 years, I chose to put bigger tyres on it, the ones on it were fine. It went everywhere I pointed it with tyre pressures sorted and smart driving.

10k is a huge budget for a 4WD if you don't want near new. Keep away from rusty as fuck cruisers and Patrols and you'll be sweet.
    FG XR6T - 388hp - 11.7 @ 119mph - sold
    2012 Prado D4D - Stockish - sold
    2013 VDJ76r cruiser - definitely stock.....
    WL Statesman LS1 - Stock
    HR31 Coupe - Unicorn

hmmm I was also lookin for a 4wd, pathfinder did come up...quick google seems to suggest they are good off road and ok on road. 2.5 turbo diesel, 10l/100. Tritons with the 3.2 are getting closer to 10k, but read up on a few issues with intake carbon build up....but i guess any car has its issues.

Plenty of cheap options about. Even 07/08 JK 4 doors are getting cheap.

Some good info here thanks guys. Should also add that i'd like to be able to tow the GTR fairly comfortably.

Something like this. Capable 4x4, good around town (compared with a patrol/cruiser) and good tower. The auto will be better for towing, but as long as the clutch/DMF has been replaced within that 200,000km and the upper timing chain guide has been done, it will continue to run like a dream into 400-500k.

The best examples (diesel auto) are in the 12-14k mark if you can stretch the budget.

Biggest problem will be getting a car trailer with a ATM of 2t to tow a gtr unless the GTR is say less than 1200kg.

Paj will tow it nicely, towed a 328 bmw on heavy hire trailer & kept forgetting it was on there

I personally steered clear of NM & NP turbo diesel ones, the fuel pump is notoriously expensive (about $3500) to replace & usually goes after 200kkm
