So if you had a shit meal you wouldnt tip?
Just curious as I plan to experience America this year.

I never tipped shit service/food, still alive today.
The tip is generally more focused on the service from the waiter than the meal. For instance, I recently stayed with a mate in Vancouver and his wage was minimum and something like $7.50 an hour. Of which, he had to give back 10% which is the 'tip' to the chefs and other people who don't serve customers. It's illegal for the venue to do that but he said everywhere does it and you simply won't get a job unless you do.
Basically, the majority of his wage is from people tipping and if he doesn't get a certain amount or the customer doesn't tip he earns below minimum wage. It's not illegal to not tip, and he regularly gets people that either don't or tip below 10%, but they just hate on you if you don't.
As I said, I don't mind tipping because It's their culture and we're over there, but it shits me all the time when they ask fr tips. The tour guides on the bus will ask for a tip at every stop, the guys at the hotel will ask for a tip for taking your bag 10m etc. It starts to ad up after a while. We went on the hop-o hop-off buses in NYC. Purel because It's a brilliant way to get around to everything (subway is $2.20 per trip). But we didn't factor in everytime we got off the busthe Tour guide (and bus driver) asking for a tip at every stop. Started to ad up
its simple for food.
good service shit food tip the waiter direct
good food, good service leave a tip for the lot
shit food, shit service - draw a dick in tomatoe sauce as you leave
did not draw a dick in tomatoe sauce at a small roadhouse between vegas and LA
I will tip all day long because the service is generally better then in Perth.
Pretty much always tipped around 12-15%, I just don't like how most places have a mandatory 20% tip for large groups, they would already get a fat tip, why make it 20%.

I got it explained to me that the bill is to cover the restraunt for the cost of the food and wages. The tip is for the service of the wait staff. Got yelled at by a barmaid in New York for not tipping enough, apologised and gave her $10, got a lot of free Jamieson shots for the rest of the night. Service in the states is top notch, they earn their tips.

Tip = to improve performance. If the service isn't good, the tip shouldn't be. When at a bar, if you're planning on being there a while, first round - tip generously. They will (should) take note, and will lead to better stronger drinksUSA still free-pours, Canada doesn't. And because drinks are ridiculously cheap, tipping becomes fuck all. Best guideline is a dollar per drink/round, 2 for bigger rounds etc... One good example from my trip was Hooters in Madison, 4 double jacks and coke was $18. No biggie
But yeah, on with the funnies
I usually have no issue with tipping over there as the service is much better than we're used to and it's.. well their culture.
I did however get into a blue at a restaurant once when we didn't tip for a group of 6 and refused to tip because the service was absolutely shit and made Perth look silver service. Staff were having laughs amongst themselves, orders were taken incorrectly, some of our group had finished their meal and others hadn't received meals yet and the restaurant wasn't busy at all blah blah blah.
My US friends suggested we reduce the tip to 10%Nah, shit is shit and mediocrity shouldn't be rewarded.
Just so you guys know, those of us working in hospitality over here work hard for you too. It's not all about the cushy minimum wage and the bar sluts you know...
Not that many people tip over here, I for one no longer care since we have to share ALL tips... but still.
I used to clear over $100 on a weekend behind the bar at the windsor. you were guaranteed to easily get $35 a night friday and saturday, provided you weren't a weirdo and you worked hard.
These days I was averaging $40-50 a FORTNIGHT when i was working 4-5 day weeks at my current employer. I guess that's what happens when other people keep their tips secretly and the managers have their fingers quite deep in the pie...
and this movie was super accurate, except we are in Australia so we don't expect tips, and I've never seen any food be fucked with that wasn't going to staff members that were significantly not liked (eg half a block of butter into a pasta that was going to a fat manager)

Doing the wrong job. When I was delivering pizza's at 18-19 I would make 30-50 a night. If there was a footy game or something on sometimes over 100. This is back before credit cards over the net and things like that though. And they may of just been impressed I got the pizza to them without eating it. But I made way more as a driver than I ever did as a manager.
^^ Haha from 'Waiting'. A brilliant movie

i guarantee bartending has got me more laid than pizza delivering would. Much harder to get that new chick at the pizza shop drunk enough to consider it an option...

WHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA!
I don't even.
I don't.
I.
..Wut.
Fuck tipping.. Its not part of out culture and nor should it be. You get paid to do your job properly. If you require extra money from your customers above what they should be paying in order to put a smile of your face and provide the best service you can then that is unacceptable. Tip or no tip the service should always be the same and the best it can be. TOP SERVICE AND A SMILE IS PART OF YOUR FUCKING JOB.
I give clients way more fucking service than any bar tender or waiter would, completely different industry but that's irrelevant. Do I get tips? No.
