There's a huge wow-factor with these but they are working and low flying is extremely dangerous. If something went wrong (which is always possible) the danger zone is very large.

Just had a look and you could imagine how frustrating that would be for them! The advantage of the choppers over the fixed wings is the ability to reload from random water sources like that. Having to divert for safety reasons resulting from on-lookers in the danger zone significantly drops efficiency and risks lives and properties.

There's a lot of humour in aviation

Jase have you spotted 671 yet? Looks awesome with the Aussie flag painted down the blue part of the tail.

Its only a matter of time before someone is injured by flying debris from the Helitacs filling out of suburban lakes. Then some random do gooders will get all over Today Tonight dribbling shit about how the Helitacs should fill up elsewhere. It is possible to set up a portable collar tank and fill it from the heavy tankers on the fire ground but its very time consuming plus the collar tank only holds 3000ltr.

I know the skycrane is based up at Serpentine but is it flying yet? It was due to start on the 22/12

Yeah 671 was protecting a house on the east side and we were stopping the fire from approaching the dam that the Helitacs were filling from lol

Was watching them in traffic on the freeway the other day when the fire was in Casuarina, filling up right next to the freeway from a swamp. Pretty awesome watching them bank away to the fire.

I think Dfes need to do some sort of awareness campaign in the offseason about the dangers of these things and the stress the pilots are under when flying so low and hovering etc. Watching kids sending their kids up for photos etc is bloody terrifying.. Knowing how much these fuckers save your ass at times when on the end of a hose delays to go further for water are not needed!!

Got to have a squizz in the air intel chopper the other day... Wouldnt like to have to sit in the back for a long time!
